“The chief pleasure in eating does not consist in costly seasoning, or exquisite flavor, but in yourself.”
Cuisines We Cook & Deliver in The Bay Area
The San Francisco Bay area is home to rich, fertile soil and abundant sea life. Those natural features have shaped local food culture and continue to remain at the center of California Cuisine. The word fusion is often used when referring to the food of San Francisco, and it’s meant literally. The encounter between the native Ohlone Indians and the Spanish settlers coming up from Mexico led to a culinary melange that included colorful salsas, fideus with local shellfish, and carne asada.
Yerba Buena became San Francisco in 1848 at the start of the Gold Rush. Jobs brought tradesmen from around the world. Europeans, Australians, and South Americans came in droves.
Tea arrived from China, tobacco made its way up from Cuba, and the city constantly smelled of roasting coffee beans as New Yorkers came to caffeinate the growing workforce.
Beyond the famed Michelin-starred eateries, the food culture of San Francisco centers around two ideas: sustainability and access. The 1969 Black Panthers Free School Lunch Program influenced an expansion of government-sponsored lunch programs for children across the country.
In 1971, Alice Waters opened Chez Panisse, a restaurant that would come to define the farm-to-table movement in America. Her Edible Schoolyard Project has changed the face of school lunch, connecting children to local farmers.
Today, San Francisco is home to the oldest Slow Food chapter in the United States. The Farmer’s Market at the Ferry Building is where farmers who practice sustainable agriculture sell to a hungry, health-focused public. Run by the Center for Urban Education and Sustainable Agriculture, the goal isn’t just profitability, but in equal measure, environmental health and economic equity.
A city between mountains and surrounded by ocean, San Francisco represents a multi-cultural evolution of native ingredients and local flavors. From Shef Joon’s Japchae noodles to Shef Joan’s Goji Berry Sourdough Bread – this is the taste of San Francisco.

The Story of Homemade
Not only is homemade better for you, but we believe that it tastes better too.
Let’s explore how homemade meals from our community of shefs compare to restaurant food in terms of health benefits, taste, and more.
Our community of shefs care deeply about the people they’re cooking for. The majority of shefs are moms that have spent years cooking for their own families, with their wellbeing front of mind. That being said, your trust is our #1 priority, so we’ve implemented strict food safety protocols to give you extra peace of mind. Read more about our food safety policy here.
Why Authentic is Hard to Find!
As a nation, the United States is a melting pot of global cultures. So why is it that you find the same dishes in Italian restaurants and Indian restaurants no matter where you are? While there are many reasons why authentic food is hard to find, there are a few prevalent reasons. Let’s explore them, shall we?

Our Shefs. Our Stories.
Every Shef Has a Story!
The beauty in a homemade meal is that it has the ability to tell a story. When people cook with patience and passion, the end result is a dish that acts as a piece of artwork, a beautiful reflection of the artist who created it. Food that’s every bit as unique and interesting as the story behind the shef that made it.
The Story of Shef
At Shef, we’re rebuilding the food system from scratch, redefining who can participate in the food economy, and returning personal connection to the making, eating, and sharing of food.
